Atopy: The common thread behind allergies, asthma, and eczema

If you’ve ever wondered why eczema, hay fever, and asthma tend to show up together like an uninvited trio? Say hello to atopy.

Atopy is a genetic tendency to develop allergic conditions. It’s what links your skin flare-ups to your sneezing fits and wheezy lungs. If you or your child has one, there’s a higher chance of developing the others too.

Here’s how it works:
  • Atopic individuals have a more reactive immune system

  • Their skin barrier is often weaker, allowing irritants and allergens in

  • Everyday allergens (like dust mites or pollen) can trigger outsized responses in both the skin and respiratory system

While we can’t change our genes, we can support the skin barrier, reduce allergen exposure, and give our immune system fewer reasons to panic.

Stronger skin = calmer immune system = fewer flare-ups.
