Can cleaning too much make allergies worse?

It seems logical: fewer germs = fewer problems. But when it comes to eczema, asthma, and other allergies, that equation doesn’t always hold up.

In fact, there’s growing evidence that being too clean can actually raise the risk of allergic conditions – especially in children.

What’s going on?

Scientists call it the “hygiene hypothesis”: the theory that overly sanitised childhood environments don’t give the immune system enough exposure to microbes and infections – so it starts overreacting to harmless things like dust, pollen, or pet dander instead.

Over-cleaning can disrupt:

Skin microbiome
Frequent washing with harsh soaps or antibacterial products strips the skin of its protective barrier and friendly microbes- leading to dryness, irritation, and eczema risk.

Gut microbiome
Exposure to a variety of microbes (including through play and food) helps train the immune system not to overreact. Ultra-sterile habits may interfere with this.

Indoor air quality
Strong cleaning chemicals and synthetic fragrances can release airborne irritants that inflame the lungs and sinuses, even when though your home looks spotless.

What to do instead:

✔ Focus on reducing allergens, not sterilising
Vacuum regularly, wash bedding weekly, and use Allergoff Allergen Neutralising Spray on carpets, mattresses and upholstery.

✔ Choose gentle, fragrance-free products
Avoid harsh cleaners and skin products with perfumes, alcohols, or antimicrobial additives.

✔ Let kids get messy outdoors
Early exposure to nature and microbes may help regulate immune responses later in life.

✔ Build the skin barrier
Clean with soap-free products, moisturise daily, and protect vulnerable skin with barrier friendly products.

A home doesn’t need to be sterile to be safe. In fact, a little less disinfectant and a little more balance might be exactly what your immune system needs.
